17th MAY: MATADOR II ENTERS THE 37th TROFEO PENON DE IFACH

Matador II (owned by Barry McCrae) has entered the 37th Trofeo Peñón de Ifach regatta, one of the highlights of the local offshore racing calendar. The event consists of two legs, beginning in Calpe on Thursday 21 May at 10:00am and finishing in Formentera after a 65-nautical-mile passage. Following a rest day on Friday, the second leg starts at 10:00am on Saturday 23 May for the return race to Calpe. Points are awarded for each leg, with the overall winners determined from the combined results.

Matador II is a MAT 1070 cruiser-racer crewed by a mix of CBYA members and regular crew. She will compete in the highly competitive ORC3 class. Boats to watch include the two Italia 11.98s, Va de Bo and Mini Plis Play; the Dehler 38s Pimpsten and LEstret; the local First 36.7 Aurora from Calpe; the consistently competitive Salona 37 Pajuelin; and Guaguanco 4, sailed by a father-and-son team who are double-handed European champions.
With a total fleet of 40 boats expected on the start line, the regatta promises to provide a spectacular sight in the Bay of Calpe. All boats will be fitted with tracking devices, allowing supporters to follow the race in real time. Tracking details are expected to be published on the regatta website closer to the start.
