09 FEB: PRESENTATION - MY OCEAN ADVENTURES
Published 16:36 on 10 Feb 2026
John Mackney gave a talk about his Ocean Adventures, speaking about the many ocean crossings he has made in his own boat and others he has skippered or crewed on. The talk was presented along with slides and pictures, accompanied all the time by many amusing anecdotes. John talked about the wildlife he encountered at sea; whales, fish, birds and other sea life. He also described the stress of ocean gales, equipment failure and navigation challenges but also the excitement of arriving after a sea passage of 5-6 weeks. John also passed on knowledge and tips about how to fill your day when sailing long distances, and how to manage long and dark night watches with just the moon and stars for company.
There was a lot of info about the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, both about the racing and the cruising divisions, and offered to help anyone who was thinking of taking on such a passage.
The audience feedback was that it was a very entertaining evening and lots of question were fielded and answered by John during and after the presentation.
If you have had an experience that you think the CBYA would like to hear about, why not consider giving a presentation yourself. It's very rewarding and the members would be very appreciative.
