5-Clubs Yacht Regatta

A celebration of competition, seamanship, and club spirit on the water

A memorable FVCV regatta this weekend, and mixed results for the Members yachts. CBYA Members and friends came together for two days of exciting racing, changing weather condition and great camaraderie ashore. From the first warning signal to the final prize presentation, the event showcased everything that makes our these regattas special: skill on the water, teamwork, and a strong sense of CBYA rivalry throughout.

Event Highlights

The weekends racing was divided into two events over the two days; El Rumbo Solidario (Saturday) and the second leg and the 4th round of the 5-Clubs regatta on Sunday. There was competitive racing across the fleet; boats are divided into groups according to their handicap, and a full programme ashore consisting of a dinner followed by prize giving with everything hosted by the Real Club Náutico de Calpe. Throughout the weekend there were plenty of memorable moments. Sailors were tested by varied conditions with shifting winds and later, rain and thunder and lightning on Saturday, but lovely sunshine and a building wind on Sunday.

Results

Jeffertje 3, TeamTac and Xufin were proclaimed champions

After the four completed races, the big regional winner in Group A was Carl Bal's Jeffertje 3 (RCN Calpe), which achieved victory thanks to the good results obtained during the first day. The silver went to Hugo Blasco's Marina Greenwich and the bronze to Manuel Gallego's Ithaca.

In Group B, Gustavo Gastaldi's TeamTac won the championship with a notable advantage over Barrys Matador II, second classified. Third place went to Miguel Noriega's Pajuelin XII Benidorm.

For its part, Group C completed three races with clear leadership of Jorge San Simón's Xufin. The silver went to Guillermo Dieter's Purple Rain and the bronze to María J's Calama.

In Sundays 5-Clubs event, the CBYA boats finished in the following corrected order: John Mackney Sapphire, 7th; Allen Bradley Racer X 9th; Barry McCrae Matador II  10th. 10 boats competed in the class in total.

Race Recap

Saturdays racing began in light rain but a strong breeze, which allowing the race committee to get the fleet away cleanly and on schedule. Crews quickly settled into their rhythm, with strong starts and smart positioning proving crucial around the course. However after the first race the racing was abandoned due to torrential rain and lightning, and the race committee called a halt on safety grounds. Getting back to the marina was a challenge as there was almost zero visibility in the heavy rain.

On Sunday, the conditions had become much better with winds ranging from 8 18 knots. Crews that adapted quickly to shifts and pressure changes faired well but many of the race leaders found themselves becalmed at the windward mark, meaning the fleet closed up as the wind filled in from behind.

Looking Ahead

Racing is now over until September. The next race will be on the 19th September in La Villa.
