A Day on the Water CBYA Day Charter
Sunshine, sailing, swimming… and a successful man-overboard rescue!
Last Monday, 5 October, saw the first CBYA day charter from Denia since the summer break and after three days of storms and rain, we were certainly ready for some sunshine!
The forecast had promised an overcast day with only a very light north-westerly breeze. Fortunately, the weather gods had other ideas. The clouds cleared, the sun came out and, best of all, there was enough wind to get us properly sailing.
Our skipper for the day was Fran, who some members will remember fondly from previous CBYA charters. We didn't have to wait long to put the sails up they were set even before we had left the harbour.
Heading for Jvea
With a good breeze, we headed towards Jvea, looking for a sheltered anchorage where we could stop for lunch.
As the morning progressed, the crew got to know each other and several members took turns at the helm. Fran also took the opportunity to run us through a man-overboard (MOB) drill although he gave us a warning that we would be tested later!
After several hours of sailing, we anchored behind Isla del Descubridor and it was time for lunch.
A very special swimming stop
Some of the crew took advantage of the warm, clear water for a swim, while those who had forgotten their bathing suits could only watch enviously!
Fran then showed us something rather special: a small grotto inside a solitary rock in front of a tiny cala. The entrance could be reached by diving into the clear water.
Inside, sunlight filtered through the opening and reflected off the water, creating a brilliant blue natural spotlight. It was an unexpected and beautiful sight one of those little discoveries that makes a day on the water memorable.
And then… MOB!
Eventually it was time to head back to Denia. Unfortunately, the wind had completely disappeared, so the engine had to take over for the return journey.
But Fran wasn't going to let us off the hook when it came to our MOB training.
As we headed home, he threw a fender overboard and announced that it was time for the test!
The crew sprang into action and, as Fran put it, we passed with flying colours. Our unfortunate victim was successfully recovered although, to be fair, Simon the fender was probably the easiest MOB we are ever likely to rescue!
A great day out
By the time we stepped ashore from s/v Corcho XV, a Beneteau 45, the crew were tired but very happy.
A great day's sailing, sunshine, swimming, a hidden grotto, some valuable MOB practice and plenty of opportunity to get to know fellow CBYA members.
What more could you ask for from a day on the water?
Here's to the next CBYA charter!
