Meet the TOMs!
This special event is designed to introduce members who are not familiar with yachts in general or the TOM 28 sailing yachts specifically. The event format will include the use several TOMs with an RCNC approved CBYA skipper on each yacht. There will also be an additional experienced TOM sailor to act as first mate. Together they will take members out for a cruise around Calpe bay. You will get to sail for about 40 minutes (or more depending on demand) which is ample time to practice and run through a number of basic manoeuvres such as:
- Leaving harbour
- Handling halyards (ropes the raise and lower the sails)
- Handling sheets (ropes that control the sails)
- Tacking (turning the boat upwind),
- Gybing (turning the boat downwind)
- Returning to harbour
Only white sails will be used i.e. Mainsail and Jib (no spinnakers will be used). The TOMs are keel-boats, which means, unlike a dinghy they cannot capsize. Everything you need to know to sail safely will be explained in the pre-sail briefing, which will be given by your skipper. Your sail will be fun and stress free. Hopefully you will come back and continue sailing on these fun boats and learn more sailing skills. It really is the perfect way to start sailing.
Payment for sailing is made in cash €10 per person to RCNC sea school. Insurance is covered through a policy that each sailor needs to buy. If you don't already have an FVCV (SomVela) license, then you will be able to buy a day license from the Calpe Club office for €1,60 (please bring ID)
The sailing will be followed by a social lunch
